What does “Top of the 8th” mean?
Top of an inningThe visiting team is batting. “Top of the 8th” means the visitors are batting in the first half of inning eight.Bottom of an inningThe home team bats second. “Bottom of the 8th” means the home team is batting in the second half of inning eight.Three outsEach team keeps batting until it makes three outs. Then the teams swap attack and defence.Nine inningsA normal game has nine innings. If the home team already leads after the top of the 9th, the bottom of the 9th is not needed.Extra inningsIf the score is tied after nine innings, the game continues into extra innings until there is a winner.Seventh-inning stretchAfter the visitors bat in the 7th, everyone gets a chance to stand, stretch and join the traditional ballpark sing-along.
